Looks like now more than ever we need citizens to support transit!

Nashville 34th of 43 on Green Cities Index
From the Nashville Business Journal:

Nashville is ranked 34th among 43 U.S. metropolitan areas in a report on America’s green cities.

The Green Cities Index ranks metro areas on a variety of environmental factors, including traffic congestion, transit use, water quality, carbon emissions, LEED-certified projects and number of green jobs. (LEED refers to the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design green-building certification system developed by the U.S. Green Building Council.)

Nashville was weighed down by its low use of public transit, which ranked 40th. The city ranked 27th for travel time, 22nd for sprawl, and 19th for both the number of LEED-certified projects and green jobs per capita.

The index was compiled by the Business Courier of Cincinnati, a sister paper of Nashville Business Journal. It draws on data from a variety of government and research agencies.
The list evaluated the 40 markets in which ACBJ business newspapers are located, plus Los Angeles, where the company operates a business news Web site, and Indianapolis and Cleveland.

The index looked at variables such as commuting habits of residents, travel time and fuel use, and air and water quality. The list was topped by West Coast cities, with the top spot going to the Portland-Vancouver-Beaverton metropolitan statistical area in Oregon and Washington.
Second on the list is San Francisco-Oakland-Fremont. The Honolulu MSA is third.
